AIDA pool freediving championships 2015 - video

Daan Verhoeven's latest video really encompasses the atmosphere from Worlds this year. Amazing how something you train for and look forward to for so long can come and go so fast! I make an appearance around the 4min mark.

The importance of freediving clubs

I recently wrote an article for Freedive Magazine on my experience being part of a freediving club and why I think every freediver should join one. You can get a copy of the magazine here:

208m dynamic

Not all that happy with this swim as I got myself disqualified. However at the end of the day it's the longest underwater swim I've ever done and I've realised all I can do is learn from it and ensure I get a white card next time. So, without further ado, here is that one time I did something I never, ever thought I'd do: turned at 200m.

MDC poolmaster apnea challenge

In March this year I competed in a pool competition in Kuala Lumpur. The competition consisted of all 3 disciplines in 1 day. I entered in this competition as I wanted the extra practice before Pool World Championships in June and freediving competitions aren't held very frequently this side of the world.

My results were as follows:
DYN: 191m
STA: 4.18
DNF: 125m

I went into the comp knowing that my first swim was likely going to be my only decent one and that was certainly the case. I somehow pulled off 191m, far more than I had expected to do so early in the year. My next two disciplines were not so great. Likely from putting too much effort into dynamic. However, I still managed to gain enough points to finish with 1st place. Jean-Pol Francois won the men's division.

Walter Johnson was another competitor that I met during the competition. He has a very resourceful website called "Freediving Solutions". Might be a good one to add to the bookmarks bar! He has added a page with a few videos of my dynamics. You can find it here:

Dairy and Diving

It has been over 6 months since I last posted on this blog. Pretty slack, I know. You might be wondering what it is that has triggered this return after such a hiatus. Was it one of the 2 pool competitions I competed in? My first ever depth comp? The announcement of where individual pool World Championships will be held next year? Nope, none of that. Something far more mind blowing!

What I really want to do is shed some light on a long term belief within the diving community. Every diver who has ever done a beginners course whether it be scuba or freediving has probably been told at some point to avoid dairy before diving. Because dairy causes an increase in mucus production, right? Well, apparently not. Actually it turns out that this has never been scientifically proven.

Disclaimer: I have zero medical or nutrition qualifications. If there are any doctors/dietitians reading this that could back this up that would be great. Or if anyone finds an article to the contrary please post it in the comments. Until then, the chocolate milk is staying!

Benefits from drinking chocolate milk (in moderation):

  • Protein helps your body maintain and build muscle
  • Fat and carbohydrates give you energy
  • Calcium for healthy bones
  • Vitamin D for cardiovascular health
  • Riboflavin helps your liver detoxify your body

Looking for motivation?

Here are some inspiring quotes and affirmations I turn to when I'm struggling to find motivation. I hope they inspire you too. Not mine. Just sharing.
